December 1984, Bhopal: Thousands died in the worst industrial disaster of the world.
This video by Al Jazeera examines the devastating events of Bhopal, India in 1984, when a cloud of poisonous gas released over the city killed thousands in the world’s worst industrial disaster. The video also talks to survivors about the incident and its terrible legacy for those who live there.
As lawyer Mr. Tiwari says:
The tragedy is the largest industrial tragedy in the world, and the lesson for us is to ensure that before we handover the license to operate to someone, we do our checks.
Today, after 23 years, the lesson is more relevant than ever before - with global companies wanting to set-up all kinds of investments in India - it’s a big thing - we have always wanted to be here in this position - but we must watch out because there will always be a few businesses that will want to benefit from the weaknesses in our system of checks and safeguards.
