Bhopal, May 9: The water crisis in the city is has assumed gargantuan proportions due to intense summer heat. There are cases where people have come to blows over water issue. Since there was delay in repair works of Kolar pipeline today water was not supplied in the City through taps hence there was commotion in the City. Although Municipal Corporation team had made preparations to deal with the situation but due to shortage of resources and large population employees were incapable of supplying water in all the colonies. At one place in Barasiya people took out knives and in some areas there were fights regarding water tankers. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) claims that water supply will be restored tomorrow but the fact is this that to overcome this acute water crisis it will take two-three days.

Bhopal is situated in the heart of India, as the capital city of the state of MP. Bhopal has a modern section (new Bhopal) and an old city, and hills and lakes give the environs much scenic beauty. According to a myth Raja Bhoj made this town in 11th century AD and the modern city was founded by dost Mohammad Khan in 1723 after vanishing Mughal Empire. Bhopal is a wound that continues to worsen. Beyond the initial horror and devastation of the gas tragedy is the spreading damage of environmental and genetic assault.

Bhopal today presents a multi-faceted profile. Bhopal is the site of the world?s worst chemical disaster. It is also the site of a vibrant international movement for justice and a life of dignity for marginalized people affected by toxic pollution and corporate crime.

Bhopal is a useful base for several interesting short excursions. Construction of the Taj-ul-Masjid, one of Bhopal’s more recent monuments, began under Shah Jahan Begum, who ruled from 1868 to 1901, but was completed only in the 1970s. Bhopal and its aftermath were a warning that the path to industrialization, for developing countries in general and India in particular, is fraught with human, environmental and economic perils. Some moves by the Indian government, including the formation of the MoEF, have served to offer some protection of the public’s health from the harmful practices of local and multinational heavy industry and grassroots organizations that have also played a part in opposing rampant development.
