I like forts. With the grandeur of the nature as a backdrop and numerous mysteries of the history buried in its often crumbling ramparts, it always gives me a thrill to visit these forts in India. Over the years, I have been lucky to visit number of beautiful and memorable forts in India including Red Forts in Delhi and Agra; Pratapgarh, Sinhagarh and Devgiri in Maharashtra. India has a rich heritage in which Forts have played a significant role in the course of the history. After visiting few of the forts in Europe, I cannot but recall my visits to Indian forts.
Though special in their unique way, today I want to describe my trip to Sinhagarh, which is situated near Pune in Maharashtra. The fort has a special place in Maratha history as Tanaji, one of brave generals of Shivaji, the greatest of Maratha Kings, was instrumental in its capture & died during the battle. In this fort, as they say, the pleasure as much in the journey as in the destination. Walking from the base of the fort near Khadakvasla dam, you have to take the tricky steps to reach the top. This journey is much more fun during the rainy season as sometimes when are near the top, you are actually within the clouds.
Once you reach up, the fort itself is not in a great situation but the remains still give you a good idea about the glory days gone by. A trek around the entire perimeter will also give you opportunity to sit in some quiet corner away from the general tourist and soak in the ambience that has so many inspiring stories to tell. Last but not least, do try out the special Marathi food on the top of the fort (Pithala Bhakri). After being tired from all the walking that you will do, it will come across as manna from heaven.
One final thought that keeps on coming to my mind is that the forts in India are like jewels that are still neglected & not presented in their proper setting. With some work, they have the potential to shine so much brightly & attract many more tourists. These forts are a reminder of the past of the country where they stood tall against the invaders.
Trivia: The prestigious NDA (National Defence Academy) at Khadakwasla is not far from Sinhagarh. And there is also the Institute of Armament Technology (IAT) at Girinagar, which is a scenic place close to Sinhagarh.
